The Delhi High Court on Tuesday allowed a petition of former High Court Judge Mukul Mudgal, who was recently appointed observer for the upcoming India-South Africa cricket test match, to give entry to children from economically weaker sections and those studying in government schools in Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium here to watch the match for free.
A Division Bench comprising Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice V. Kameswar Rao said there was no objection to the plea from any party, including the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). The DDCA agreed to bear the cost of the season tickets fixed at Rs.50 per child.
The court noted that a prayer had been made to allow children along with the accompanying teachers inside the stadium at the east stand lower level, having capacity of about 8,225 seats, for the match.
The court left it to the discretion of Justice Mudgal to extend the facility to the children from economically weaker sections and children studying in the government schools in the Capital. Justice Mudgal is a former Judge of Delhi High Court and former Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court.
In his petition, Justice Mudgal had stated that since most of the pavilion stands remained vacant during test matches, the tickets could be given to school children. DDCA counsel Sunil Mittal said there was no objection to this from the cricket body.
The court had last week paved the way for DDCA to hold the test match at Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium from December 3 to 7.
