Chris Evans' Top Gear has begun filming with a surprising new addition.

The TFI Friday host was joined by former world champion Formula One driver Jenson Button and the mysterious Stig as filming for the new series kicked off.

He was filming with the new production team at the Top Gear test track at the Dunsford Aerodrome.

Chris looked to be having a great time in the passenger seat with Jenson driving a McLaren 650S Spider.

TV host Evans was previously seen filming a segment for the show at the Race of Champions at the Olympic Stadium, London, despite the fact the show won't be broadcast until later next year.

Sporting a red checked lumberjack hat and green leather jacket, the TFI Friday presenter could be seen enthusiastically shouting into a microphone.

The 49-year-old star was also snapped chatting to Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo during filming.

The new series of Top Gear, which has been the subject of controversy following the firing of Jeremy Clarkson, will air in May 2016.

Shooting so far in advance has been an odd concept for Chris, who described it as "weird".

But he went on to discuss how he's thrilled to be fronting "the biggest show in the world".

Chris, who also hosts TFI Friday, said: "We started filming on Wednesday, which is a bit weird.

"It means we're going to throw to that from our studio in May and we're going to have to be the same but different."

Chris became the new presenter after the firing of Clarkson and the exit of his co-stars James May and Richard Hammond earlier this year.

The redhead, who used to be married to actress Billie Piper , never thought he would get the chance to fill the star's shoes.

He explained: "I never thought the job would come up. I was convinced that James May and Richard Hammond would carry on without Jeremy [Clarkson] and I think to be honest they were up to a point, the BBC were, that's why it all went quiet because we all sort of knew that was going to happen.

"And then 48 hours before TFI Friday went out in June, James and Richard told the BBC they weren't going to do it. So all the balls were up in the air.

"I got the call when I was with Will who produced TFI Friday with me.

"I get involved with exciting television programmes. That's the biggest in the world.

"My friends weren't involved in it any more. I didn't want to be a pawn in that horrible game of who’s doing this and who’s doing that.

"But once it became a blank canvas then I had to say yes."
