National scene: Police begin probing Pelindo II suspect

T

he National Police questioned state port operator Pelindo II'€™s technical and operational director, Ferialdy Nurlan, for the first time on Monday as a suspect in an alleged graft case.

Following a 12-hour questioning, Ferialdy refused to answer questions from reporters in relation to the case surrounding the procurement of 10 mobile cranes in 2013.

However, his lawyer, Frederich Yunadi, confirmed that the questioning had been related to the case.

'€œThey just asked about the procurement issue, that'€™s all. Nothing out of the ordinary. This is the first time FN [Ferialdy] has been questioned as a suspect,'€ Frederich said at the National Police headquarters in South Jakarta.

'€œIt seems like the [police'€™s] anticorruption division is working professionally; they did not rush even though they were limited by time. [FN] just answered with what he knew [about the case] and what he saw.'€

Frederich explained that Ferialdy would be summoned for a second questioning at a later date.

The case has not been without controversy. Former National Police detective division chief Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso was removed from his post shortly after the police raided Pelindo'€™s headquarters in North Jakarta on Aug. 28.

The raid prompted Vice President Jusuf Kalla, then on a visit to South Korea, to personally phone Budi and demand the probe be dropped.

The House of Representatives subsequently established an inquiry committee, led by Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) lawmaker Rieke Diah Pitaloka, to supervise and investigate the case.
