Tarumajaya Police chief Adj. Comr. James Silitonga said local people had caught the suspected thief, identified as Taryono, 28, as he and an accomplice fled after reportedly breaking into the house of salted-egg trader, Supriyadi, 45. 'The victim came home from the market at 9 a.m. to find his belongings missing,' James said on Friday as quoted by tribunnews.com.
The goods stolen included a 32-inch LED TV, a mobile phone and a collection of gemstones worth Rp 8.2 million (US$599).
Supriyadi immediately checked his back door, where he found the culprits carrying his TV away, James said. The businessman cried for help, upon which his neighbors rushed to the scene and apprehended the thieves, though one managed to escape.
'The residents beat Taryono black and blue. Fortunately, there was a police officer on patrol in the area who rescued the burglar from the violent wrath of the local populace,' James said.
