Cadre of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Monday staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate protesting against the Puducherry Government for failing to take any steps to provide relief to affected sections and mitigate the situation arising out of the torrential rains.

Leading the demonstration, former MLA and coordinator of DMK (south) R. Siva said the heavy rains had wreaked havoc causing widespread damages to crops, houses and infrastructure in Puducherry and its suburbs.

The government had failed to take any steps to assess the damages and provide necessary relief to the affected sections.

Mr. Siva said the government had failed to desilt the tanks and water bodies resulting in large-scale damages to property. He demanded a compensation of Rs.10,000 per acre for crops damaged in the rains and Rs.5,000 as relief for all ration card holders.

The government should request the Centre to immediately depute a team to make an on the spot assessment of damages in Puducherry.
