Malappuram DCC president quits

November 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - MALAPPURAM:

District Congress Committee (DCC) president E. Mohammed Kunhi has resigned from the post in the wake of the defeat of the party in the district in the recently held local bodies’ elections.

Mr. Kunhi submitted his resignation letter to Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president V.M. Sudheeran. No word was available from the KPCC, however.

The United Democratic Front (UDF) lost several local bodies in the recent elections largely owing to lack of unity between the Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Both parties suffered because of the discord, and the Congress suffered the most.

The IUML, at a high-level meeting of UDF leaders, had asked the KPCC to conduct an impartial investigation into the problems between the Congress and the IUML in certain areas of Malappuram district.

As many as 24 local bodies, including Kondotty municipality, had gone to polls with the Congress and the IUML fighting each other. The fight has done much damage to both parties.

Sources said the KPCC had reportedly asked the DCC leadership to take responsibility for the fiasco. Mr. Kunhi’s resignation was said to be in response to that call from Mr. Sudheeran.

Mr. Kunhi was not available for comments.
