‘Set up more toilets for transgenders’

November 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - Mysuru:

A second toilet for transgenders was inaugurated today by Pranathi Prakash, a transgender, at the suburban bus stand.

The first one was inaugurated a few days ago at the Mysuru City Bus stand.

Participating in the inauguration of the toilet for transgenders at the KSRTC suburban bus stand, ZP president Pushpavathi Amarnath said that it was the right of transgenders to have basic facilities at public places. She appealed to the Transport Minister to set up toilets exclusively for transgenders all over the State.

Though transgenders were allowed to use the ladies toilet in Mysuru and other places, it was embarrassing for both women and transgender to share the toilet, she said.

Ms. Pushpavathi further said that she had already communicated with the senior officials of the Railway in Mysuru to set up toilets for transgenders at all railway stations coming under the South Western Railway.

Mysuru is the first city in the country to have a separate toilet for transgenders, she said, adding that when a group of over 100 transgender had met her at the ZP’s office about six months ago, she had instructed the Divisional Controller of the KSRTC to set up an exclusive toilet for transgenders.

Ms. Prakash urged the government to provide pension to transgenders on the lines of widow’s pension. She said that transgenders were leading a pathetic life and appealed to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to come to their rescue and help them lead a “dignified life.”
