With Colin Kaepernick on injured reserve, the 49ers are looking for a quarterback. And with not many quarterbacks available, they tried out a well-traveled journeyman on Monday.

Per a league source, McLeod Bethel-Thompson got a workout with the 49ers. According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the 49ers signed Bethel-Thompson to the practice squad.

The move to try out only Bethel-Thompson is a bit of a surprise, given that coach Jim Tomsula told reporters that the team would try out two quarterbacks on Monday.

Unless linebacker Kevin Snyder (who also received a workout) is being considered at quarterback, they definitely tried out only one.

The decision to try out Bethel-Thompson underscores the reality that, when it comes to NFL quarterbacks, the demand far outweighs the supply. He has two prior stints with the 49ers, and the 49ers have only two quarterbacks on the active roster: Blaine Gabbert and Dylan Thompson, an undrafted rookie who was promoted from the practice squad on Saturday.

Bethel-Thompson, who played college football at Sacramento State, has never appeared in an NFL game. He has been on the roster of the Vikings and 49ers.
