CID to probe ‘technical’ death of murder accused in custody
Nagpur: The state CID is set to probe into the alleged custodial death of Jabbar Yadav who died on November 20. The man, who was in his 40s, was found in an unconscious condition next to his mother’s body on November 18. Though suspected of murdering his mother Runadevi, Yadav was shifted from the residence to hospital in an unconscious state but not arrested by Khaparkheda police.
The death, considered to be now in police custody, has pushed the cops into a tricky situation of having to face a CID probe as a mandatory affair in such cases. The state has already earned the dubious label of maximum numbers of custodial deaths in the country.
Police had found a kitchen knife under Runadevi’s bed. Yadav was found wearing a red colour shirt. It has been sent to the Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL) to ascertain whether there were any blood stains on it. Cops feel that Jabbar may have consumed poison after stabbing his mother.
Sources said Jabbar used to harass Runadevi for money to buy liquor. Runadevi, who got pension for her later husband Shamrao, had been trying to dissuade her son from consuming liquor. This led to regular quarrels at home.
Police said Jabbar’s wife Renu was sleeping with children in another room when the murder is likely to have taken place. It was she who claimed the possible involvement of her husband behind the murder. Khaparkheda police had registered offence of murder after Runadevi’s death against Jabbar. Later, Jabbar’s demise was recorded as accidental death.
Nagpur Range IGP Ravindra Kadam said that Jabbar was shifted to hospital as his health too was under scanner. “Prima facie Jabbar had symptoms of ailments of liver due to excessive liquor consumption but more details are awaited after scientific examinations,” said Kadam.
