Police will install a set of CCTVs at the city's
borders in
east Delhi, which comprises areas near Vivek Vihar and Mayur Vihar.
The decision was taken after east Delhi MP, Maheish Girri granted Rs 1.57 crore from the MPLAD funds to Delhi Police to improve its surveillance infrastructure to keep a check on
criminals escaping to neighbouring states after committing crimes in the city.
Officials said these cameras will be installed to keep an eye on the people entering and exiting the city through these borders, which would be directly monitored from a control room based at the district police headquarters. This will also help in increasing security of women. TNN
"We have been doing it for some time and under community policing we have encouraged installation of about 1.52 lakh
CCTV cameras. The step by Girri is unprecedented and will help police in fighting criminals in a more effective way," said Sanjay Beniwal, joint commissioner, eastern range.
Senior police officials say that equipments would help them enhance security of the areas around the border which are densely populated. "We are doing our best to reduce crime rate. A community policing programme will be initiated in the area jointly with elected representatives, resident welfare associations and citizen to ensure crime free East Delhi," said Beniwal.
The funds provided by the MP for installing CCTV cameras are likely to be available in one and half months, after which work will start on it
