Threatening to launch a massive movement against the ruling Trinamool Congress in the wake of attack on party supporters, Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary Surjya Kanta Mishra said on Monday that if the Chief Minister failed to maintain law and order, then the Left parties would take over this responsibility.

“The rule of law has to be established. I am warning the Chief Minister. If you cannot establish rule of law in Bengal within a month, then we will take over the responsibility of maintaining the law and order,” Dr. Mishra said addressing a gathering at Mayureshwar in Birbhum district.

Attacks on cadre

The attacks on the jathas organised by the CPI(M) have been reported from Birbhum, Paschim Medinipur, Bardhaman and Hooghly districts.

The gathering was organised in the same area where CPI(M) leaders were attacked allegedly by the Trinamool Congress men during the jatha last week. A former CPI(M) MLA was allegedly forced to hold his ears and say that he would not support the CPI(M) again.

Dr. Mishra, who is Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, called upon the party workers to put up a resistance to the Trinamool and win over the supporters who had switched over to other parties, including the BJP.

He said the Chief Minister should be ready for another march to Nabanna. In August, during a March to Nabanna, Left supporters had turned out in large numbers and the police had a tough time to control them.

“The Trinamool cannot suppress our fight for people and democracy. Do not get cowed down by these hooligans and put up a fight,” Dr. Mishra told party workers.

A public interest litigation petition was filed in the Calcutta High Court by CPI(M) MLA Gouranga Chatterjee demanding a judicial probe into the attack on party supporters.

Commenting on the developments, Trinamool leader and Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said a new fashion of projecting themselves as “victims” had come up.

“Instead of launching a democratic movement, they are creating drama saying they are attacked. The people will not believe it,” he said

Mr. Hakim said that those who had unleashed attacks on the people for 34 years were being resisted by the people and the blame was on the Trinamool Congress.
