LONDON — Disney’s mystery toon “Gravity Falls” was named top international series at the BAFTA Children’s Award, two days after its creator/exec producer, Alex Hirsch, announced that the show would end at the conclusion of season two.
“Paddington,” which was produced by Heyday Films and StudioCanal, was named top feature film, while Universal’s “Minions” won the kids audience vote in the movie category at the ceremony Sunday. “The Next Step” won the audience vote for television show and “Minecraft” won the games category.
Cartoon Network’s “The Amazing World of Gumball” won animation series; it was the show’s third BAFTA for animation, and sixth overall. The award for animation for preschoolers went to the rebooted “Clangers,” narrated by Michael Palin.
The BAFTA for factual was won by “I am Leo (My Life),” a documentary following the life of transgender 13-year-old Leo Waddell. It was first broadcast as part of anti-bullying week on CBBC, the BBC’s channel for kids.
Jessica Ransom took the award for performer for her portrayal of Mary Queen of Scots in “Horrible Histories,” the seventh award presented to the series.
Production company Somethin’ Else won three BAFTAs. It triumphed in the independent production company category, took the award for interactive (adapted) for “The Dumping Ground: You’re the Boss,” and received a second successive win for “Poetry: Between the Lines” in the learning category.
The channel of the year category was won by CBBC for the third time.
