The Swedish-Swiss automation technology giant ABB started redundancy talks at its Helsinki factory on Monday. The negotiations involve ABB's Motors and Generators unit, which has 970 employees.

The group's vice president, Otso Ikonen, says that as many as 95 people will be sent packing. Job cuts are to affect all staff groups within the unit.

Talks are expected to be wrapped in about six weeks – or just after the New Year's holiday.

ABB says it must reorganise its operations for both economic and production-driven reasons.

The company has some 5,200 employees in Finland, and 140,000 in about 100 countries worldwide.
