Atlanta Shakespeare Company to Present Sensory Friendly Performance of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) November 23, 2015 -- The Atlanta Shakespeare Company will offer a sensory-friendly matinee performance of The Christmas Carol at 2pm on December 5, 2015 at the Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse on Peachtree Street in Atlanta, Georgia. The performance will be open to all members of the public but will be designed to make the experience of attending a theatrical production more manageable and enjoyable for audience members with autism spectrum disorder or other sensory-related issues.
Before they arrive for the show, audience members will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with what every step of their journey from the parking lot to inside the theater will look like by viewing “Our Social Story” on the Atlanta Shakespeare Company’s website: http://www.shakespearetavern.com/index.php?/news/show/asc_presents_a_sensory_friendly_performance_of_a_christmas_carol_dec_5/.
Before the performance, the actors will introduce themselves, emphasize that the events of the play are fictional, and show some of the costumes and musical instruments that will be used in the production. During the show, house lights will be kept on at a low level and the performance will feature a reduction in sound volume. Audience members will be free to move about the theater, change seats, make noise, and use electronic devices as needed, and a separate quiet room will be available throughout the performance. Trained staff members will be available to provide any assistance needed by audience members.
The performance reflects the Atlanta Shakespeare Company’s commitment to making theater available for all audiences, as Artistic Director Jeff Watkins explains: “The Atlanta Shakespeare is mission-driven to make our work as accessible as possible. This includes everybody; just because someone is differently abled is no reason not to do all we can to make these programs available.”
