BENGALURU: Domestic and international tourists heading to Karnataka can soon witness the state’s rich ethnic culture. ‘Tanda tourism’, as the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation likes to call its initiative, will take tourists to tandas, the hamlets of nomadic Lambani tribes.
“KSDTC is trying to develop Tanda tourism in which one can stay with the Lambani community, learn about their culture and have a taste of their cuisine.
Lambanis are migrating to urban areas but if we take people to them, we can ensure this community doesn’t die out. Youngsters keen on exploring new cultures and learning about unusual communities can take this opportunity to learn about some unique ethnicities of Karnataka,” Hussain SA, chairman KSTDC told TOI on the sidelines of an event at FKCCI.
“Karnataka has a rich culture and heritage and to attract more tourists, we should highlight local products, cuisines and ethnicity. We should also focus on domestic tourists instead of international tourists alone and sell the unique points of Karnataka to them,” he added.
Giving an example of lack of facilities on state highways, the chairman said, “After Tumakuru, a family cannot stop anywhere on the Bengaluru-Pune highway for basic needs. There are no toilets or eating joints and the state’s biggest problem is lack of tourism infrastructure.” he said.
“Along the highways, we’ll set up food courts, clean toilets and first-aid centres which will be managed by private players. KSTDC will be a facilitator. We’ll also make sure the local cuisines of Karnataka don’t die out.”
The state will soon get the first trained batch of Tourist Mitras on November 24, wherein 150 Home Guards trained to guide and protect tourists will be deployed. tourism to provide a glimpse of Lambani heritage
