A six-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 28-year-old neighbour in a slum in Khar (west) recently. The accused has been nabbed and remanded to police custody.

According to the Khar police, the incident occurred about three days ago in a slum area in its jurisdiction. The victim was home alone and the accused, identified as one Rakesh Jadhav, trespassed into her residence and sexually assaulted her. It has been learnt that the girl got scared and started crying. The neighbours saw this act and alerted her parents. The girl also confided in her mother after she came home. Her mother immediately rushed to the Khar police station where an FIR was promptly registered against Jadhav.

An FIR has been registered under rape sections of the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Jadhav was arrested the same day. He was produced before a sessions court in south Mumbai, where he was remanded to police custody till November 23 for further probe. Jadhav and the child have been subjected to a medical test.
