This Ludhiana kid is special in every field
LUDHIANA: This nine-year-old child can neither speak nor hear, but he can do Bhangra, throw shotput, and take part in athletics. Akashdeep Singh of Maksudra village has won a gold medal in shotput at the district level, several bronze medals in various races and kabaddi, and accolades for his Bhangra performances in school.
Says his teacher, Gurtej Singh, an inclusive education volunteer (IEV) at the centre for special children in the Government Primary School in Maksudra: Akashdeep joined our school around five years ago.
He is, literally, a special child. He is in the forefront of all activities in school " be it sports, gardening, or cultural activities. He has many achievements in his kitty, as he won a gold medal for shotput, by throwing a four-pound ball up to a distance of around 16 metres in the district-level games organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports held in May this year.
He added: "Apart from that, Akashdeep has won many bronze medals, including a bronze, in 100 metres race in block-level games in Ghudani Kalan in 2012-2013, another bronze in 100 meters race at the district-level SSA games held in 2013, and yet another bronze for kabaddi at the block central level. He is very receptive to signals, through which we teach him about various games, and he picks things very quickly. He can make it very big in sports, so we are training him for advanced level games."
School authorities say they would try to help him participate in Olympics for special children, as it would encourage other such children to dream big. "We are trying to get him the best possible training for the coming events, and are keeping a tab on high-level games for special children," said Ramajeet Kaur, the school principal, adding that Akashdeep is very good in studies and extra-curricular activities too.
"Whenever he participates in Bhangra events in the school, it is a treat to watch him dance on the dance numbers with children, even as he cannot hear but keeps a watch on other children. He is also the first to come forward for cleanliness and gardening activities in the school," said the principal. She added that the father of Akashdeep, Gurmeet Singh, also cannot speak or hear, whereas his mother Manpreet Kaur is a normal person.
