NAVI MUMBAI: Four men have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a
doctor from DY Patil
Hospital in
Nerul in Navi Mumbai around 8.30pm on Thursday.
The accused—Premnath Mhatre (36) and his brother Somnath (32) and their relatives Rakesh Bhoir (34) and his brother Rajesh (32)— who are from Navi Mumbai allegedly assaulted Dr Rajat Khandelwal (28), said the police.
The Mhatre brothers had been insisting that the doctor immediately perform a sonography on their father Suresh Mhatre (80), a cardiac patient.
The doctor told them that the sonography could be deferred as the
patient was not in a serious condition.
This, said the police, led to an argument between them.
Senior police inspector Sangita Alphonso said that when the four men fisted the doctor, other hospital employees rushed to his rescue. The doctor has sustained minor injuries, she said. A magistrate’s court released the accused on bail, said sub-inspector Sonali Rajguru.
Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors said it is this year’s 31st
attack on a doctor in the state. “The proposal to amend the Doctor’s Protection Act, 2010, must be taken up for discussion at the winter session of Parliament, failing which MARD will agitate,” said Dr Sagar Mundada, president, central MARD. One demand is to up punishment to eight years, he said.
