Delhi Police claim to have busted a syndicate of fake Indian currency notes with the arrest of a Bihar-based mastermind.

Fake notes brought to the capital from Nepal with face value of Rs 1.05 lakh were recovered. The arrested accused has been identified as 29-year-old Haridya Thakur. His accomplice, Nagender Ram, was also apprehended, police said on Thursday.

“Secret input was received about a syndicate operating clandestinely and circulating fake Indian notes in Delhi and NCR,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav. On November 10, information was received that Haridya would come at Nigambodh Ghat near Kashmere Gate.

On the pointing out of an informer, a police officer posing as a decoy customer struck a deal with him to supply fake notes. As soon as the transaction was completed, Haridya was overpowered.

On his cursory search, 87 fake notes of Rs 1,000 and 30 notes of Rs 500 denominations were seized from his possession. During interrogation, it was revealed that the notes were bought with the help of his accomplices Nagender and Heera Lal.

“The high-quality notes were being procured by Haridya at the rate Rs 300 per thousand from a man named Sandeep in Bihar. Sandeep procured them from Nepal,” Yadav added.

The notes were being sold to retailers at 50 per cent rate of the face value and the gang members also used to circulate them in weekly markets. Haridya was remanded to police custody and his accomplice Nagender was arrested at his instance. Face notes with face value of Rs 3,000 was recovered from him.

Haridya used to run a barber shop in Bihar’s West Champaran district. Sandeep had lured him to join the syndicate and also introduced him to accomplices Nagender and Heera Lal. Nagender, 34, is a school dropout and joined the syndicate to make quick money.
