LDF to rule six municipalities in Thrissur

At the end of a neck-and-neck fight, Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidates have been selected as chiefs in six of the seven municipalities in the district. The United Democratic Front (UDF) has to be content with just one municipality.

Guruvayur

Congress rebel P.K. Santhakumari has been elected as chairperson of the Guruvayur municipality with the support of the LDF. In the 43-member municipality, she received 22 votes. The lone BJP member didn’t participate in the voting. Ms. Santhakumari will be the chairperson for the first three years. The CPI(M) and the CPI will share the rest of the term.

Chalakudy

Usha Parameswaran of the LDF was elected as chairperson in Chalakudy municipality. While she secured 19 votes, Alice Shibu of the UDF received only 16 votes. The BJP member didn’t participate in the voting. In the 36-member council, the LDF received 17 seats and the UDF won 16 seats. Two Independent candidates and one BJP member too won the election.

Irinjalakuda

Nimya Shiju of the UDF became the chairperson of the Irinjalakuda municipality. She defeated LDF’s K.K. Sreejith for one vote. In the election, one vote became invalid.

Kodungallur

C.C. Vipin Chandran of the LDF is the new chairman of the Kodungallur municipality. In the 44-member council, he got 24 votes. BJP‘s V.G. Unnikrishnan got 16 votes.

Chavakkad

N.K. Akbar of the LDF has been selected as chairman of the Chavakkad municipality. He received 20 votes in the 32-member council.

Kunnamkulam

Seetha Raveendran of the LDF has been selected as chairperson of Kunnamkulam municipality. She received 15 votes. Seven BJP members and three RMP members didn’t participate in the election.

Wadakkanchery

Sivapriya Santhosh has been selected chairperson of the newly-formed Wadakkanchery municipality. She received 25 votes.
