HYDERABAD:

In Mirpurkhas division, the toughest contest will be seen in the desert region of Tharparkar district.

The influential Arbab family, now associated with the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz, will defend its decades-long unrivalled electoral superiority in front of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party. The latter made inroads in the district in 2013 elections.

The Arbabs, led by Arbab Lutfullah and Arbab Anwar, are being supported by Ghausia Jamaat of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Shah Mehmood Qureshi, PML-Functional, Qaumi Awami Tehreek and another influential family of Sarhindis. They also have the support of several Hindu and Muslim communities. The elections have been postponed in Mithi and six UCs, five of which are in Diplo taluka and one in Mithi taluka.

PPP MNA Faqir Sher Muhammad Bilalani, Gianchand Meghwadh, Senator Khatumal and MPA Dost Ali Rahimon are campaigning for the party in Tharparkar.

The PTI is vying against the PPP in Umerkot. Both of them are locked in one-on-one contest for the district council and municipal committee seats. The two parties are also leading the competition in at least three of the seven town committees. The PML-F, another influential player in Umerkot, is restricted to a couple of town committees where its candidates are contending against the PPP.
