The court of Additional Sessions Judge Karunesh Kakkar has convicted four persons belonging to terrorist outfit Babbar Khalsa Federation on the charges of possessing a huge quantity of RDX, AK-47s and explosive substances.
They were ordered to undergo rigorous imprisonment for five years each with fine of Rs 6,000.
Those convicted includes Harminder Singh of Indra Nagar near bus stand, Ludhiana; Manjider Singh of Hussainpura, Patiala; Jaswinder Singh alias Jassi of Purana Bazaar, Rajpura; and Gurjant Singh of Banoor, Patiala.
Pronouncing the verdict, the court held that the prosecution had successfully proved the guilt of the accused beyond any reasonable shadow of doubt.
According to the prosecution, Inspector Arvind Puri had received secret information about Harminder Singh, who was a wanted terrorist having a reward of Rs 5 lakh.
It came to his knowledge that Harminder was heading a gang with the help of other co-accused under the leadership of Jagtar Singh Tara, who had absconded from Burail jail.
The police registered an FIR under the Explosive Act and Arms Act at Khanna City police station on July 16, 2010. When the police conducted a raid, they claimed to have seized 3.5 kg of RDX, detonators, timer devices, AK-47s, pistol, live cartridges and other equipment helpful in making bombs.
Defence lawyer Jaspal Singh Manjpur said that all the accused were presently detained at Nabha jail. He claimed that they had been behind bars for more than five years and were likely to be released soon.
