A local court on Tuesday granted the Amritsar rural police three-day remand of Surinder Singh Kang, the NRI who had crashed his SUV through the Wagah-Attari border crossing on Monday. He was also medically examined at the Guru Nanak Hospital during the day.
“We have been given three-day police remand of Surinder Singh Kang. We will investigate him. He has also been examined medically but the report is pending. We cannot say anything about his objective. He looks like he is mentally upset. He also seems a religious person. It is possible that he wanted to go to Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. But nothing can be said as of now. We are probing the matter,” said Yadwinder Singh, SHO Gharinda.
Kang’s family had claimed that he suffers from bipolar disorder and depression. “Kang may have not have any horrible intentions but he has surely exposed a huge security lapse at the border. Security agencies exposed in the incident would love to declare him mentally upset. The investigative agency, however, will need to cross check every angle before concluding its investigation,” a senior police official said.
