JAIPUR: The Meo gangs of the eastern Rajasthan have now got into the 'kidnapping business' too. The gangs first lure people with promise of selling gold bricks at cheaper rates and then kidnap them.
On Monday, a joint team of Alwar and Himachal Pradesh (HP) police rescued two youths who were kept hostage by a gang that demanded a ransom of Rs 10 lakh from their family.

According to Baroda police, the conmen had called two youths of Himachal Pradesh and asked them to come to Alwar to buy gold bricks at cheaper rates. "Kedar (24), a native of Himachal Pradesh, had got the call from a man identified as Raju. The caller claimed that he had got five gold biscuits, each weighing 950 grams, while digging his farm and said that he wanted to sell them at a cheaper rate," said an officer.
The police added that Kedar visited Nangal Tappa village in Alwar district to get these biscuits. "The victim and his friend Anil (26) reached Nangal Tappa village. There, they were kept hostage. The conmen asked Kedar to call up his family members for sending Rs 10 lakh to ensure their release," the officer added.
Later, a relative of Kedar, who got the call informed Himachal Pradesh police. "On Monday, in a joint operation, we rescued both the two youths - Anil and Kedar. We also arrested the accused, identified as Nizamuddhin (34) and Jaffru (27); however five others managed to flee," the officer said.
Senior police officers serving in Mewat region (Bharatpur and Alwar) said, "Earlier, they (Meo gangs) were confined to cheating by selling brass bricks claiming them to be made up of gold. Now, they are into kidnapping as well."
