After Diwali break, gridlocked again
GURGAON: Residents were caught in heavy traffic at Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Shankar Chowk and Sohna Road after a relatively congestion-free extended weekend owing to the Diwali holidays. Commuters also complained of slow-moving traffic in Cyber City.
A traffic cop said the additional pressure on the highway was because of extra vehicles on the road after a five-day break.
Balbir Singh, DCP (traffic), said the traffic this Monday was a lot more compared to other Mondays after an extended weekend.
Though traffic was moving relatively smoothly on the expressway, the main choke-points such as Shankar Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk and Cyber City were heavily packed.
"I cannot even describe how bad the situation was this morning. It took me 45 minutes to go from Vodafone Belvedere Towers Metro station to IndusInd bank Cyber City Metro station," said Keshav Gaur, who works in Cyber City.
The situation was no better on the Sikanderpur-Cyber City stretch, which also witnessed heavy traffic.
"There was a lot of congestion near the Sikanderpur underpass on Monday morning," said Satish Yadav, who commutes every day from Noida to Gurgaon for work. Jalvayu Vihar in Sector 30 also saw heavy traffic. The Monday morning traffic has started giving gurgaonites nightmares. One of the commuters tweeted, "Trying to sleep but thoughts of tomorrow morning traffic enroute Gurgaon is already giving me nightmares."
Many commuters, fed up with police inaction, expressed their disappointment on social media. While many tweeted saying the presence of cops on the roads only makes situation worse, others complained of lack of response on department's Facebook page even after repeated posts over concerns about traffic arrangements in the city. One such commuter tweeted, "Gurgaon Traffic Police always create traffic jams. Cars manage to move faster when they are not around."
