Twenty-one new boxships rolled out in October

A TOTAL of 21 containerships were delivered last month with capacities ranging from 936 TEU to 19,870 TEU, according to Alphaliner.

The largest vessel, the 19,870 TEU Al Nefud was delivered to the United Arab Shipping Line (USAC). The vessel is the third of six ULCS of 19,870 TEU, dubbed 'A18-class' and advertised by the carrier with a loading capacity of 18,800 TEU.

The newbuilding programme was initiated in August 2013 with five ships firmly contracted with one option exercised later. Vessel construction is shared between the Hyundai Heavy Industries (Ulsan) and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (Mokpo).

The Al Nefud has been put into service on the Asia-North Europe service jointly offered by CMA CGM, CSCL and UASC within the 'Ocean Three' (O3) agreement (named respectively FAL 8/AEX 1/AEC 1 by each carrier), which all six sister ships are planned to join.

Meanwhile, the Hamburg-based Schulte Group has received the Mariner, sixth of 12 units of 2,357 TEU of the new 'Sdari 2400' design and were ordered in three stages from China's Zhejiang Yangfan Shipyard from October 2012 to May 2014 for deliveries running until early 2017.

The Mariner, which follows the delivery in August of the Meridian, has been fixed by APL for assignment to its Balboa-Ecuador service (WCS), replacing the 1,341 TEU Alioth.

One of the smaller boxships delivered last month was a 936 TEU vessel, the Moliva, ordered in Turkey over eight years ago and has finally taken to the sea for the first time during the last week of October.

The vessel was built by Yardimici Shipyard, in Tuzla and construction began in December 2007 and it took seven years until her completion in September 2014. The boxship languished at the yard one more year, before sailing for the first time a couple of weeks ago, under ownership of a company associated with the shipyard.
