Continuous research was needed to prevent infectious diseases, said N. Venkatesh Prajna, Director Academics, Aravind Eye Care Hospital, here on Sunday.

Delivering the inaugural address at ‘Sepsis 2015,’ a conference organised at Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre, he said, “Micro organisms are more intelligent than army generals and it is important to combat infections effectively.”

S. Subramanian, Head, Infectious Diseases department, Global Hospitals, Chennai, said that with medical advancements, old and sick people had better chances to live but they were more vulnerable to infections. “Complicated medical procedures come with the risk of infection and there is an increasing resistance to drugs among patients now. So we must focus on preventing hospital-acquired infections. We must discuss standardised procedures that can be followed across the industry so that the risk of infection is reduced and such problems are identified early,” he said.

Ramesh Ardhanari, Medical Director and Head of Surgical Gastroenterology, S. Kumar, president, Indian Medical Association, Madurai Meenakshi branch, Ahila Ayyavoo, Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist, GKNM Hospital, Coimbatore, K.S. Kirushna Kumar, honorary secretary, IMA-Madurai Meenakshi branch, and Uma Sekar, Head, Microbiology Department, SRMC addressed the gathering.
