“A cup of coffee can warm your body, but it is kindness that warms the soul”. Welshman John Sweeney thus explains the motivation that inspired him to create in his own country the movement “Suspended coffees”. The coffee shop is the location where a small, but meaningful gesture of solidarity is carried out: the customer first enjoys his own coffee, then goes to the cash desk and pays for another coffee too, that will be drunk by someone who would like to but cannot afford to. Starting from the center of Naples, this good practice has become widespread worldwide.
In Philadelphia the walls of Rosa’s Fresh Pizza are covered in post-its with dedications. They were stuck there by the clients of the pizzeria who every day offer a “suspended” slice for the 40 or 50 homeless. In France the initiative was adopted for bread with the name of “baguette en attente” (on hold): launched in 2013 it has now spread throughout the country.
