Canberra weather: More rain in the capital before a cool weekend

Canberra will wake up to a gloomy Friday with the chance of a thunderstorm.

The sky opened up at around 4am, with thunder rattling much of the capital.

On Thursday, Weatherzone meteorologist Rob Sharpe said a low pressure trough lingering across NSW and eastern Victoria was expected to move across the ACT overnight, creating the risk of more showers and storms.

He expected a medium chance of showers and a possible thunderstorm on Friday, which is forecast to reach 25 degrees.

Westerly winds are tipped to reach 15 to 20 km/h before shifting easterly in the evening.

But the weekend is set to be chillier with tops of 21 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, just below the November average maximum temperature of 23 degrees.

"There's a slight chance of a shower on Saturday and Sunday," Mr Sharpe said.

"There should be a fair bit of sun, a bit of cloud still and the odd shower. If there are any showers they will be light as well, I'd expect."

There's good news if you're missing the warmer and drier weather.

Mr Sharpe said the new week was set to gradually warm up to a forecast top of 28 degrees on Wednesday.

The odd storm or shower hasn't stopped creative Canberrans snapping stunning shots of the region's landscape this season.

Adrian Bradley of Hawker is among entrants in The Canberra Times' spring photo competition, having captured the territory glowing in moody blues and purples from the summit of Mt Coree at sunset.

The competition will remain open until the last day of November and anyone is free to enter for their chance to win a share of $1000 in prizes.

A maximum of three photos per entrant can be submitted as JPEG attachments to photocomp@canberratimes.com.au

Don't forget to include your name, address, phone number, and a photo title and description of when and where it was taken.
