Al Ain edge past Fujairah, register first win in AGC

Dubai - Al Ain raised their tally to six points and improved their chances in the chase for a spot in the semifinals of the tournament.

Al Ain edged hosts Fujairah 2-1 to register their first victory in the Arabian Gulf Cup in the fifth round of the competition at the Fujairah Stadium in the eastern coast on Tuesday.
Fellipe Bastos and Saeed Al Katheeri struck for Al Ain as Muhanad Khamis netted the solitary goal for the home team.
With this result, Al Ain raised their tally to six points and improved their chances in the chase for a spot in the semifinals of the tournament while Fujairah remained with four points and need a miracle to finish in the top two of the Group-B.
Al Shabab are showing the way with nine points from four starts and the Abu Dhabi giants Al Wahda are two points off the pace in second position, but from five starts.
However, Fellipe broke the deadlock in the 35th minute with a powerful low range free kick to put Al Ain 1-0 in the lead. This was also the result at half-time.
Meanwhile, Fujairah levelled the result after the break as Muhannad Khamis made it 1-1 within just 20 seconds from the restart. But few minutes later, Saeed Al Katheeri quickly restored the visitors' lead, with a another long distance short to make it 2-1 in the 48th minute. "We have started without any of our foreigners to give more chance for the local elements and the move proved to be useful."
