Diwali is a favourite festival of many people. Godess Lakshmi blesses people she feels like while she takes the tour of every house. She is invited, welcomed, cherished and worshipped. The process is pretty similar in Bollywood as well. Festivals are a major draw here as from small actors to superstars scramble to lay their hands on it. Diwali is one such jackpot that everyone wants to score. Being a family festival, people like to go to movies with their families and so, it becomes one of the prime celebration for Bollywood as well. It sealed the fate of many while brought many down on their knees. Diwali is that powerful but on a happy day like this, we wouldn't want to spoil the fun by speaking about those films which couldn't cash in on the festivities. There's a reason Shah Rukh Khan's next film is called Dilwale. There is a long history attached to it. A film that changed the way romance is perceived in Bollywood, made him the romantic hero we drool so often these days. A simple love story which has the requisite ingredients of family and friends, DDLJ was class apart. Even now the film is running at Maratha Mandir. When it released in 1995, the film had earned nearly 61 crore becoming the biggest blockbuster of that year. But today it is more than those numbers. It is our very own FAIRY TALE ROMANCE.

Raja Hindustani (1996)

Box office: 43 crore (Approximate nett)

Perhaps for the first time an Aamir Khan film was released on Diwali with Karisma Kapoor opposite him. Replete with good music and dollops of drama, this film made every distributor, producer happy. But nothing could compare the kiss between Aamir and Karisma under a tree while rain poured down hard! Something that revolutionised a few things and left Sunny Deol's Dhai kilo kha haath Ghatak much behind!

Dil Toh Pagal Hai (1997)

Box office: Rs 59.82 crore (India, approximate)

Yes, DDLJ introduced Bollywood to Switzerland in a big way but it was Dil Toh Pagal Hai which brought in great moolah from overseas. NRIs just lapped it up making it the highest grossing film of that year! Well, when you have Shah Rukh Khan romancing Madhuri Dixit in a musical with an added dazzle of Karisma Kapoor, you have got to like this film.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)

Box office: Rs. 80.12 crore (India, approximate)

The film was hugely anticipated as it brought back the immortal pairing of Shah Rukh-Kajol in romantic surroundings. And as was expected, the film earned profoundly. That was a no brainer anyway...

Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999)

Box office: 46 cr (India, approximate)

Sooraj Barjatya brought in Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit in a film and sprinkled dollops of family dust. Resultant? We still watch reruns of this film every weekend without batting an eyelid.

Mohabbatein (2000)

Box office: 70.62 crore (India), 1939 cr (Overseas)

2000 was the year of asserting yourself. Hrithik Roshan's deafening entry made many tongues wag, with people hailing him above Shah Rukh Khan. But never underestimate the Baadshah! His Mohabbatein trumped Mission Kashmir and proved why he is the King of Bollywood

Veer Zara (2004)

Box office: 58 cr

A beautiful love story transcending borders, Veer Zara was nothing less of a fairy tale in a country obsessed with Pakistan bashing! The romance between Shah Rukh and Preiti Zinta is the stuff romantic books are made of. It was sacrificing and eternal which had the desired affect on the box office.

Don (2006)

Box office: 51 cr

Shah Rukh Khan decided to go mean that Diwali, shooting off firecrackers ever way possible at the box office. He was slick, he was suave and was just him rather than being Amitabh Bachchan who had immortalised the character many years back.

Om Shanti Om (2007)

Box office: 98.4 cr

Farah Khan is one person everybody is envious of. She has Shah Rukh Khan as her best friend who doesn't think twice before splurging on her films. Om Shanti Om was made at an approximate budget of 35 crore. It created controversies but by then, SRK had earned in profusely!

Fashion, Golmaal Returns (2008)

Box office: 60 cr, 180 crore

There have been instances when two films earned equally well but Fashion and Golmaal Returns takes it to an altogether different level. Both are different movies, one bared the fashion industry while the other made us laugh like crazy. And both saw tremendous success!

Golmaal 3

Box office 108 cr

Rohit Shetty was back to do some Golmaal at the box office resulting in great returns. While the first film in the series is still the best, the third one is just crazy fun. Every punch and dialogue became famous making it a great Diwali gift. It's funny how Ajay Devgn and Shah Rukh Khan find themselves lucky on Diwali. Now can you blame them for fighting over the festival a few years back?

Ra. One (2011)

Box office: 114.29 cr (India, approximate)

Shah Rukh Khan wanted to make a film for his kids and superhero was all that they could ask from him. Ra.One happened which didn't really get great reviews but Diwali bailed him out! The festival is more loyal to him than anyone else who release their film on this occasion. Not that we were very fond of G.One as our superhero, but it did make good money.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012)

Box office: 120.85 cr

Jab Tak Hai Jaan got into an ugly fight with Son Of Sardaar but you don't challenge SRK on Diwali turf. He will always win and he did! The film earned more than 100 crore soon enough!

Krrish 3 (2013)

Box office: 244.92 cr

Our resident superhero Krrish was back wearing a mask and cape to save the world of planes with stuck wheel and kids dangling from electrical wires. It wasn't even a patch on its prequels, but kids took to it instantly. Hrithik Roshan was amazing in the film but it was Kangana Ranaut who stole the show as a sexy mutant!

Happy New Year (2014)

Box office: 203 cr

Yet again Farah Khan takes advantage of being friends with Shah Rukh Khan and we get a musical heist film which is extremely glittery. And it ends there! But then, having Shah Rukh in a Diwali release was enough for his fans and it went on to become one of the highest grosser!
