This festive season, Bali Pratipada, Padwa and Bhau Beej call for an extended celebration in the city. As people prepare Diwali goodies after performing pujas at home, they are also busy making plans and arrangements for what they would be doing on Thursday and Friday.

Dr Alka Gogate, a resident of Shivaji Park, is one of them. In the midst of attending guests — who have come home for Diwali — she will also be making sure that she prepares something special for her husband on Thursday and a day-after for her brother.

Bali Pratipada, Padwa and later Bhau Beej are the festivals that are celebrated across India. "While Padwa is observed for long life of husbands, Bahu Beej is about the love between brother and sister," said Sanjay Ashok Ranade, priest at Mumbadevi Temple explaining the significance of the days.

According to Hindu mythology, Bali Pratipada is the day when Lord Vishnu's fifth avataar, a dwarf, took over all the three worlds from demon king Bali. While doing so, Bali was sent to the underworld. As the king loved his people too much, he comes to earth once every year to meet them. And people celebrate his homecoming by cooking delicacies.

Delicacies are also prepared for husbands during Padwa and for brothers during Bhau Beej. "My husband will be giving me some special gift and a day later my brother will give me one. I will be making special farals and sweets for them," said Gogate.

During Bhau Beej, brothers and sisters going to each other's house or at a decided place. Some like Manoj Sagar visits the home of his sister. "Since we are three brothers and live separately, we all will go to her place and then enjoy the delicacies cooked by her," he said.
