A jeweller in Malad’s Malwani area turned sleuth and tracked down a burglar who broke into his shop in an unsuccessful attempt at trying to steal jewellery. The owner of the shop, after watching the CCTV footage of the break-in, identified the culprit through a slight limp in his walk and then traced the rickshaw driver after making inquiries in his neighbourhood, before handing him over to the police.

The break-in was reported on Tuesday, when Pawan Kumar Verma, 28, who runs a jewellery shop in Rathodi village, saw that somebody had tried to break open his locker the previous night after entering through the ceiling.

“I understood instantly that the burglar was not professional. He used an iron tool to bend the iron grill in the ceiling and enter the shop. There was a CCTV camera inside the shop and he damaged it after locating it, but his footage had already been captured by then. Later, he tried to open the jewellery locker with the iron tool but failed and then probably fled in panic,” said Verma. The victim told Mirror that he studied the CCTV footage recorded before the camera was damaged and it clearly showed the accused breaking into the shop.

“After scrutinising it carefully, I noticed that the accused had a slight limp in his walk. His face looked familiar as well. I remembered that a rickshaw driver from this area had injured his foot a few days ago due to a minor accident and knew that the culprit lived in the area,” he said.

He then showed the photograph of the burglar to some people he knew and found out where he lived. He then informed the police about the accused. The police immediately arrested Rinku Yadav, a rickshaw driver and resident of Rathodi, from his residence and registered a case against him for house break-in and trespass with intent to steal under Sections 457 and 452, read with Sections 511 of the IPC at the Malwani police station. Police sub-inspector Avadhut Wadikar said Yadav has been sent to judicial custody.
