Call them 'Uggly,' I don't care: Classic Uggs get new look; still rock

Carly Mallenbaum
USA TODAY

Classic Ugg boots have been warming the toes of everyone from surfers (the brand's first niche audience) to fashionistas (now the boots are sold at Nordstrom's) for nearly 40 years. The "Classic" shoe is the softest one-- you know, the one that looks kind of like a potato on your foot-- that many women (though there are men's boots) throw on at the first sign of a fall chill.

These are the classic shoes you know and love/hate.

More on the remade shoe in a moment, but first: Why do we wear these shoes, even when they're so "Uggly," as many haters have pointed out before congratulating themselves for their unoriginal pun? Well, I'll tell you.

This season, the shoe is getting a makeover.

4 reasons Classic Uggs are still the best and-I-don't-care-what-you-say

1. They're freakin' cozy

Dare you to put on a pair of the sheepskin-lined boots and tell me otherwise. I DARE YOU! The shoe just feels like a thick, warm blanket wrapped around my cold, sometimes-sock-less feet.

2. The shoes slip right on

Have to quickly head out to walk the dog? Running late for class? Need a shoe to wear to the gym on a cold day before you change into sneakers? Classic Uggs are the shoes for ready by the door for you. There are no buttons, snaps and zipper to contend with. (Speaking of zippers, has anyone else notice that there's an influx of unnecessary zippers on boots this year? As in: The zipper on the shoe doesn't actually unzip, and is merely there for show? Not into it.)

3. They're almost anti-fashion

Wearing Uggs doesn't have to mean you're making a statement about fashion, but there's something empowering about wearing a shoe that clearly flatters neither the wearer's feet nor their legs. As Deckers Brands President Dave Powers told USA TODAY (Ugg is a Deckers brand), customers who love the classic boot "almost don't care what people think when they wear it."

It's almost like giving the finger to boots with stiletto heels. And no, Ugg is not looking to take on pointy heels, as Ugg Creative Director Leah Larson told us, "It's hard to do a sheep-skin stiletto."

4. They just got more versatile

Up until this year, the classic Ugg boot could only be worn in a casual setting, with the option of cuffing it or not over leggings or jeans (skinny or just stuffed inside the boot). The boots weren't meant for "going out," exactly, and didn't do well in the rain and snow, considering the shoes had little traction and weren't waterproof.

Well, times have changed: The Ugg Classic just got completely made-over.

We present the Classic Luxe shoe (out now) and the Classic Slim (out tomorrow, Nov. 11). And now, you can wear Uggs ALL THE TIME.

The Classic Luxe

The Classic Luxe is a much slimmer boot than the Classic, with shorter fur.

It has a "much slimmer shape with a zipper (like, a real, useful zipper that's not for show) that we haven't done on the Classic," says Larson, the designer. The new boot uses shorter fur than before, and has a sleeker silhouette. "They do not have the potato look," she guarantees. Prices on the dressier shoe range from $245 - 295.

The Classic Slim

The Ugg Classic gets a makeover. Check out the new Ugg Slim.

Larson says she's "taken the heel up a tiny bit" and "the heel is less slippy, so they allow you to run around in the elements." The shoe is shapelier, water-resistant and even more cushioned than the original. "It's what our consumers have been asking for. I'm excited to see people's responses," says Larson, who named the new styles (including the Kristin, which already had a soft launch) after her sisters and sisters-in-law. The new boots are slightly more expensive than the originals: $160 - 260. It's already one of Oprah's favorite things.

The Classic Slim comes in different heights.
