ublicly listed coal miner Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam (PTBA) is planning to export half of its electricity output from a planned power plant in Riau to Malaysia and possibly to a wider network in Asia, starting in 2020.
The state firm's president director Milawarma told reporters on Monday that the company was currently studying the prospect of building a power plant with a capacity of between 800 and 1,200 megawatts (MW).
Bukit Asam, he said, would work with state-run electricity company PLN and Malaysia's main provider Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) on the project, which is expected to absorb around US$2.4 billion in investment.
If everything goes according to plans, Milawarma said that the company would start commercial operation of the power plant in 2020, and the project would use 8.4 million tons of coal per year.
'We are planning to export power generated from the power plant, probably half of the output, to Malaysia,' he said. According to the company's paperwork, Bukit Asam will hold the largest stake in the mining section of the project, PLN will hold most shares in the power plant and TNB will be the majority shareholder for the transmission unit.
