This year’s Diwali could not have been sweeter and more memorable for former India wicketkeeper MSK Prasad. On the eve of the Festival of Lights (Diwali is celebrated on Tuesday in parts of south India), the 40-year-old was inducted into the senior national selection committee, replacing former World Cupper Roger Binny.

Prasad, who played in six Tests in 1999-2000 and 17 ODIs from 1998-99, was well aware of the conflict of interest, the very reason why he replaced Binny as the south zone representative.

Speaking to dna from the foothills of Tirupati on Monday, Prasad said: “I am very clear of the conflict of interest and hence resigned from all posts in Andhra Cricket Association at its Executive Committee meeting on November 5. I have resigned as Director (Cricket Operations) and also from the membership of ACA.”

Prasad got a hint of becoming the south representative in the national panel before Monday's BCCI AGM. “Along with the names of Venkatesh Prasad and WV Raman, my name was also doing the rounds. It was the turn of ACA as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Hyderabad had served their terms.”

Terming his new role as “undoubtedly challenging”, Prasad said: “It is a proud moment for me and ACA that I have been elevated to this post. I am sure I will do a good job. All of us – Saba Karim, Vikram Rathour, Gagan Khoda and myself – have played together and have a good wavelength.”

Prasad’s first selection meeting will be in Bengaluru, where the panel chaired by Sandeep Patil will select the Test team for the remaining two Tests against South Africa. “I have been called to attend the second Test in Bengaluru,” he said.

But before that, Prasad will be offering his prayers to the Almighty at Tirupati on Tuesday and seeking his blessings for his new role.
