Traffic movement in congested north Delhi is set to improve with the State government set to open the elevated road between Azadpur and Prembari Pul on Tuesday.

The six- lane corridor, which is 1.6 km long, on the Ring Road is expected to cut down commuting time as it will bypass three major traffic jam intersections at Ashok Vihar, Shalimar Bagh and Keshav Puram.

The corridor will be inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu.

The project was delayed for months as it was pending before the National Green Tribunal, which did not give permission to cut trees. The Public Works Department had sought permission to cut around 1,200 trees to take up the construction work, but was permitted to cut around 700 trees.

“The corridor was conceived along with the elevated corridor from Vikaspuri to Wazirabad. The project is delayed only by few months mainly due to ongoing Metro work. But within two years, the construction has been completed,” said a PWD official.

The corridor between Azadpur- Prembari Pul is constructed at a cost of Rs. 247 crore and the foundation stone was laid in June 2013.

Officials said among the unique features of the Azadpur-Prembari Pul corridor is that it is elevated on a single pier, a technique used in Delhi — which is known as the city of flyovers — for the first time.

As par to this technique, the highest deck is supported on single piers.

“We have constructed the flyover on single piers which has reduced the project cost and the time. Using this technique, we have reduced the cost by 30 per cent.”

The civic agency, which decided to test the strength and quality of the flyover in September, had dumped concrete weighing 350 tonnes on the highest deck for a day. “The results were satisfactory. The strength of the elevated road is at par with the recently constructed flyovers,” said the PWD official.
