ITANAGAR: The dedication ceremony of a bamboo statue of the Buddha (Poi Lu Phra Long) and the Poi Potwa Panchong festival at the Golden Pagoda monastery, Noy-Chenam (Tengapani), Chongkham, ended on a colourful note on Friday.
The celebration marked the auspicious occasion of Maha Pavarana which refers to the procession carrying holy relics of the Buddha from Sri Lanka.
The Maha Pavarana is generally celebrated by Theravada Buddhists to mark the end of three lunar months of Vassa.
Former minister Chowna Mein and his family consecrated the 13-feet-high statue. The unique bamboo Buddha is the first of its kind in the country and was crafted by Shan monks from Myanmar in 45 days. The material for the statue was collected from Myanmar, Mein said. The bamboo statue was named 'Phra Ingta-shaan'.
Mein said there are similarities between the Tais of India and the Thais in terms of culture and religion. He said he has been trying to promote friendship among the various Tai communities living in South East Asia. Mein added that he was also trying to ensure the opening of the historic Pangsau Pass, which, when open, will help Tai communities in India and Myanmar connect.
Devotees from various parts of Namsai district offered tun-patesha (celestial trees) to the Bhikkhu Sangha on the occasion.
