Mangalore off to bright start

Komala brace powers Mysore to 5-0 win

Bagyashree (6th, 21st minute) and NR Swapna (30th, 40th minute) scored a brace each as Mangalore University crushed Annamalai University, Chidambaram, 6-0 in their opening semifinal league match of the South Zone inter-varsity women’s hockey tournament 2015 here at the Chamundivihar astro-turf grounds on Thursday.

KJ Chaitra (17th) and Kaveramma (43rd) struck one apiece for Mangalore University as the defending champions kick-started the deciding phase on a rousing note.

The day’s other match was also a lop-sided affair with University of Mysore coasting to a 5-0 win over University of Calicut. BM Komala scored in the 32nd and 40th minutes, while Spoorthi (12th), N Chaitra (17th) and HP Sandhya (23rd) found the back of the net once each for the victors.

Earlier, Mangalore had reached the semifinal league stage after another comprehensive 8-0 win over Osmania University, Hyderabad.

PC Nisha (3rd, 10th and 58th) starred for the Mangalore side, who ended the day with 14 goals to their credit.
