Third seed Roger Federer effortlessly moved into the third round of the Paris Masters with a 6-1 6-1 victory against Andreas Seppi.

Seventeen-time singles grand slam champion Federer needed just 47 minutes to advance past the Italian and will meet John Isner in the next round, after the American earned a 6-3 7-6 (7/3) win against Great Britain's Aljaz Bedene.

Second seed Andy Murray, like Federer, needed less than an hour to see off the challenge of Croatia's Borna Coric, with his 6-1 6-2 win setting up a third-round encounter with Belgium's David Goffin, who dropped only one game more in beating Serbian qualifier Dusan Lajovic 6-2 6-2.

Fifth seed Tomas Berdych did not have quite such a straightforward march to the next round as he dropped a set against French qualifier Edouard Roger-Vasselin before triumphing 6-3 4-6 7-5.

Berdych will again face French opposition in the next round in the form of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who waltzed to a 6-2 6-2 success against Roberto Bautista Agut.

Sixth seed Kei Nishikori was taken the distance by home favourite Jeremy Chardy but kept his composure to seal a 7-6 (7/4) 6-7 (6/8) 6-1 success.

Chardy could not progress but 10th-seeded countryman Richard Gasquet certainly could as his 6-2 7-5 triumph against Argentinian Leonardo Mayer earned him a showdown with Japan's world number seven.

Seventh seed Rafael Nadal also comfortably secured safe passage to the next round as he dispatched Czech qualifier Lukas Rosol 6-2 6-2 and he will face Kevin Anderson next up following his 6-7 (3/7) 7-6 (7/4) 7-6 (7/5) triumph against Dominic Thiem.

Viktor Troicki will meet fourth seed Stan Wawrinka for a place in the quarter-finals after he was a 6-7 (7/9) 7-5 6-4 victor against Feliciano Lopez.

Marin Cilic became the only seeded casualty of Wednesday's play - the 12th seed slipping to a 7-6 (7/3) 7-6 (7/2) defeat to Grigor Dimitrov.
