India-born singer Reshma, famous for her folk songs and her powerful ringing voice, died in Lahore, Pakistan two years back. She was suffering from throat cancer and had been in coma for a month.
Born around 1947 in Bikaner, Rajasthan in a nomadic Banjara community, she has sung for both Pakistan and Indian film industries and performed in India too. Her family had moved to Karachi, Pakistan after partition.
On her death anniversary, here’s a list of five of the most popular songs sung by her.
1. Lambi Judaai
The song from Jackie Shroff – Meenakshi Seshadri film became an anthem for unrequited love and continues to remain one of the favourites even now.
This folk song was used by showman Raj Kapoor in his path breaking directorial ‘Bobby’, starring the very young duo Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia. Legendary Lata Mangeshkar sung the Hindi version.
3. Sada Chidiyaan Da Chamba Vey
Used time and again to denote the love between a daughter and her father, this song’s sentimental value was enhanced by Reshma’s soulful voice.
4. Oh Laal Meri
If you’re a fan of hard hitting music with not-so-soft beats, ‘Dama Dam Mast Kalandar’ is the one for you. The beautifully crooned song is still considered to be a test for a good singing repertoire.
Another melody from the legendary Reshma.
