Fifteen per cent water cut has been imposed by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) starting November 1. Till now, the cuts had not shown wider impact, but now people from select pockets are feeling the pinch. There will be supply on Wednesday and Friday.

Vartak Nagar, Srinagar, Lokmanya Nagar, Gandhi Nagar, Waghbil, Upvan and few areas in Ghodbunder Road are the worse affected. Many societies across Ghodbunder Road, Manpada, Pokharan Road and other areas have worked out measures to deal with water crisis. There are few societies which have 2-3 borewells to take care of the water requirement other than drinking water. Some societies have also worked out water recycling and rainwater harvesting, so they are dependent on TMC only for drinking water.

RR Ambekar, secretary of Vikas Complex, says, "It's been more than a decade since we have faced any water crisis. Though 15% cut by TMC is bothering, we have somehow been able to manage and will sail through the condition."

K Kumar, president of PTRA, says, "Though water cuts have been imposed, till now residents have not complained. We have taken measures beforehand, but might feel the pinch in days to come."

Few buildings from Hiranandani Estates have started calling for tankers whereas areas like Waghbil and Kasarvadavli are solely dependent on TMC water supply. Residents from Prabhat Upvan too are completely dependent on water tankers and are spending around Rs2-3 lakh a month for water requirement as TMC water supply is erratic.

"Around Rs230 is being charged per consumer and for the past few months. Apart from two days, 15% water cuts has worsened the situation. So in such a situation, the corporation must also give rebate in the water bill," says Rajiv Datta, an activist.

"With lowest rainfall this year, we can understand the problem of water crisis and support TMC in dealing with it. But we must be given some rebate in water charges," says Mayur Desai, a resident.

In such a crisis, the civic body must think of taking immediate steps to control leakages and illegal water thefts. Officials must also think twice before giving permission to new buildings for water connection.

Residents of Vartak Nagar, Lokmanya Nagar and other ares say, "It is not only after 15% cut that we are facing problem. The problem has been there for the last 15 days. The water pressure is low, so we literally struggle to fill water at home. At times we get water only in the morning so we have to make sure to store enough for our daily use."

TMC public relations officer, Sandeep Malvi says, "To ensure water for future and preserve the available resource at MIDC water supply and STEM, we have imposed 15% additional water cut. This will continue till we work out some other measures."
