Bangaluru, Nov 2: The Karnataka police have ruled out the possibility of the un-identified body being that of Rudra Patil, the alleged mastermind in the killing of Professor M M Kalburgi.

A team of the Criminal Investigation Department officials say prima facie it has been established that the body is that of a person by the name of Mahantesh Shirole of Kadapur village in Chikkodi district.

Last week the police had found an un-identified body at Khanapur in Belgavi. The body bore resemblance to that Rudra Patil who has been termed as the mastermind in the murder of Professor Kalburgi.

The CID officials say that the person has now been identified as Mahantesh who was murdered by four persons. Two of the four persons involved in the murder are his cousins, the CID says.

Udaykumar, Nandakumar, Mallikajun Kotagi and Mahantesh Hosur have been accused of the murder.

The police say that the deceased person along with the four persons was on his way to Goa. At Khanapur they stopped at a liquor store.

However, after a while they took Mahantesh to a remote location and murdered him, the police also say.

Personal reasons have been cited for the murder as it was alleged that Mahantesh had harassed the family members of one of the accused persons.

While investigating the case, the police drew up a list of missing persons and it was found that Mahantesh had not returned to his home for sometime.

This led to further investigations following which it was found that the man in question was not Patil but Mahantesh, police sourced informed.
