Focus on radar technology

Radar (Radio Detection and Ranging) and radio technology expertise of the country has seen much development. Engineering graduates especially, circuit branch students, should come forward, to take challenging jobs in radar technology, said L. Gnana Michael Prakasam, Senior Scientist, Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), Bangalore, addressing students and research scholars of National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi. While academics provide the fundamentals, many practical aspects are learnt by hands-on-experience, he said. S. Raghavan, Professor, ECE Department, NIT, Tiruchi, and S. Selvakumar, Dean, Research and Consultancy, were present.

JMC retains men’s title

Jamal Mohamed College retained the men’s title in the Bharathidasan University inter-zonal inter-collegiate volleyball tournament. A.K. Khaja Nazeemudeen, secretary and correspondent, K.A. Khaleel Ahamed, treasurer, M.J. Jamal Mohamed, assistant secretary, S. Mohamed Salique, principal, Abdul Kader Nihal, director (S.F), and B.S. Sha-in-Sha, director of physical education, felicitated the team members.

ISTE convention

Theoretical knowledge combined with practical skills are essential for budding engineers so that skill oriented curriculum should be strengthened, C. Thangaraj, Vice-Chancellor, VIGNAN’S University, Guntur, said in his inaugural address at the 18th ISTE National Annual Students Convention organised by Kings College of Engineering, Punalkulam, Pudukottai district, in association with Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE). Pratapsinh K. Desai, president, ISTE, said conversion of manpower to highly skilled, talented and dynamic citizen is the need of the hour. The theme of the convention was ‘Technology for rural development to accomplish Vision India – 2020.’ Sharmila Rajaa, Chief Financial Officer, T.R.S. Muthukumaar, Chief Executive Officer, and S. Durairaj, Principal, spoke. ISTE Section Chairman Best performance awards and Best Student Chapter awards were presented. A panel discussion on ‘Challenges faced by teachers in engineering education,’ was held.

Solar panels set up

Shanmuganathan Engineering College, Pudukottai, has set up a 10 kv- capacity solar power plant at its campus in accordance with the Tamil Nadu government's green energy policy. Using the solar panels, the green energy is being utilised for the internal consumption of the college. The solar panel, set up by the Electricals and Electronics Department of the college, has been creating awareness among the masses about the advantages of green energy. A large number of students from various schools have been visiting the solar power plant. Students from Vairams Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Pudukottai visited the college and had a glimpse of the plant. A team of faculty members led by Vanisri, explained the technical details of the plant to the students.

Ragupathy Subramaniam, correspondent of the school, Akila, Principal, said the plant would motivate the students to understand the importance of the plant.

National integration camp

Around 600 college and school NCC cadets from across the country took part in a 12-day National Integration Camp conducted at the AVC College in Mayiladuthurai. Drill, command and control and leadership training were conducted. A motivational lecture was organised during the course of the camp. The cadets were taken to various places of historical importance in and around Thanjavur and Nagapattinam. Colonel K.J.N. Roy, Group Commander, NCC Group headquarters Coimbatore was the camp commandant and Colonel Vivek Misra, Officer Commanding of 8 TN Battalion NCC Kumbakonam was the deputy camp commandant.

Research programme

Bishop of Thanjavur Most Rev M. Devadass Ambrose inaugurated the first research programme, Master of Philosophy in English and Commerce at the Annai Vailankanni Arts and Science College, Thanjavur, recently when he pointed out that an educational institution must have three goals - academic achievement, career guidance and research. Among them, research took priority in determining the institution’s success, he said. The bishop underlined that the institution was starting the research programme with the intention of inculcating creative work and real mastery in the subject. The research work must be vibrant, scholarly and useful to the society, he reminded. At the same time, he asked the professor guides to ensure that research was authentic and creative besides avoiding the pitfalls of plagiarism. Head, Department of English, Bharathidasan University, C. Issac Jebastine, Annai Vailankanni Arts and Science College Correspondent U. John Joseph Sundaram, Principal P. Devanesan, and others spoke.

Cancer awareness programme

The Youth Red Cross Organisation of the AVVM Sri Pushpam College, Poondi, organised a cancer awareness programme for women recently in which former Chairperson, Blood Bank, Government Rajah Mirasdar Hospital, Radhika Michael, addressed the girl students on the need for early self detection of breast cancer which would lead to easy management of the case. Stating that even dust might cause cancer, Dr. Radhika Michael observed that cancer might affect any age group. Principal S. Udayakumar, Dean of Sciences, C. Robert Alexander, Youth Red Cross District Organiser P. Natarajan, Prof. Thiilayadi Valliyammai spoke.

Workshop on creative thinking

A three-day workshop on creative thinking ``Re imagining design – Cardboard'' was organised at the Prime College of Architecture and Planning, Keezhvelur, Nagapattinam district in which the participating students were exposed to a plethora of imaginative ideas by working on cardboard models.

Chairman of the Prime Group of Institutions N. Govindaraj inaugurated the workshop in which architects from Bengaluru enlightened the 180 student participants on various creative models. Principal A. Parisutha Rajan, Director R. Paulraj and others spoke at the inaugural.
