Governor Vajubhai Vala on Wednesday called upon the rich and affluent to adopt poor families and support them in achieving progress.

He spoke after presenting “Bangara award” instituted by the S Bangarappa Vichara Vedike on the 83rd birth anniversary of former chief minister S Bangarappa.

The Governor said Bangarappa dedicated his life for the progress and development of the State and also for the welfare of the poor and farmers.

“Bangarappa was a person of courage and conviction. He was a talented and complete leader. He had clarity and vision eradicating poverty. He proved that a common man can become a musician, sportsperson, legislator, Member of Parliament, leader of the opposition and chief minister”, the governor said.

Litterateur Chandrashekara Kambara said that Bangarappa had special liking for music and Kannada. It was during Bangarappa’s tenure as chief minister that the Kannada University was set up in the State, he pointed out.

Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises G M Siddeshwara recalled Bangarappa’s contribution of providing free power irrigation pumpsets.

Bangara awards
Three individuals were presented with Bangara awards on the occasion.  The ‘Seva Bangara’ award was presented to Basavalinga Pattadevaru of Hiremath Mahasamsthan of Bidar district. The ‘Kreeda Bangara’ award was presented to London Paralympics silver medalist H N Girish of Hassan district and the ‘Kala Bangara’ award was presented to theatre person Subhadramma Mansur of Ballari district.

Earlier, during the programme, former minister and BJP MLA Basavaraj Bommai described Bangarappa as his political guru.

Despite being the son of a former chief minister, Bommai said that Bangarappa and H D Deve Gowda were his role models. He also said that Karnataka had benefitted only under three chief ministers - Bangarappa, Deve Gowda and B S Yeddyurappa.

Strong ideologies
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said that it was rare to find politicians with strong ideologies in the present set up. “Bangarappa had always stuck to his ideologies and had never hankered after power. In fact he had quit parties whenever he felt that he had to compromise on his ideologies,” he said.
