Dehradun, October 28

The SIDCUL Board has given a green light to a proposal to generate power from waste in 18 municipal bodies of the state. A decision in this regard was taken at the Board meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Rakesh Sharma at the secretariat here today.

The “waste to energy” plan, based on the German technology, will be started at Roorkee. The city generates 500 metric tonnes of waste every day.

After Roorkee, the scheme will be implemented at Mangalore, Jhabrera, Bhagwanpur, Laksar, Landhour, BHEL (Haridwar), Haridwar city, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Mussoorie, Vikasnagar, Doiwala and Herbertpur. The waste from these cities and towns will be converted into gas which will be used to produce electricity. This would also help tackle the problem of disposal of huge waste which goes into the Ganga. The power produced from the project will be put in the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) grid. The gas produced from the waste can also be used as cooking gas.

In the meeting, Chief Secretary Rakesh Sharma directed SIDCUL to develop three mini industrial estates in the state. He said Harshil, Naugoan and Purola were being developed as apple chain centres while cold storages were being developed at Bhikiyasain, Munisiyari and Betalghat. The Board also gave permission to allot three acres of land for Centre for Aromatic Plants at Selaqui and installation of 132 power sub-station at Sitarganj industrial estate.
