Roger Federer eases past Mikhail Kukushkin in Basel

First seed Roger Federer eased into the round of 16 of the Swiss Indoors Basel with a confident 6-1 6-2 first-round defeat of Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin.

The Swiss created 13 break-point chances and took four of them to secure his first win in more than five weeks in just 55 minutes. He will next face Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber, who had earlier progressed with a 6-4 3-6 6-3 defeat of Poland's Jerzy Janowicz.

Fifth seed Richard Gasquet, of France, dropped the second set but overcame Jiri Vesely, of the Czech Republic, 6-3 6-7 (2) 6-4, and will next challenge Austria's Dominic Thiem.

American sixth seed John Isner won 6-3 6-4 against Latvia's Ernests Gulbis.

There was also a 6-3 6-4 win for Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov, over Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky, which secured a round of 16 match-up with third seed Rafael Nadal, of Spain.

Belgian eighth seed David Goffin overcame Italy's Andreas Seppi 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, and next meets French qualifier Adrian Mannarino.

Finally, Serb qualifier Dusan Lajovic also progressed, when having trailed 4-2 in the opening set, he was winning 6-4 2-0 when Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov retired.
