CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation is planning to privatise conservancy operations for all expanded areas including Ambattur, Shollinganallur, Manali and Alandur.
Now, the only private agency managing garbage collection and transportation is Ramky Enviro Ltd, in three zones, Adyar, Kodambakkam and Teynampet. Earlier this year, the corporation dropped plans with a private operator to engage in source segregation across four zones, saying the firm quoted a high rate.

Garbage will soon be picked up straight from homes and taken to transfer stations without any bins on the streets, mayor S Saidai Duraisamy said during the council meet on Tuesday. A bin-less city is a vision that the civic body has been nurturing for a couple of years.
As plans to shift the dumping ground to Minjur and Kuthambakkam have been shelved, corporation is planning to house waste-to- energy plants within the dumpyards in Kodungaiyur and Perungudi.
“We will scientifically close the landfills in Perungudi and Kodungaiyur using a capping method which will allow gases like methane to escape,” Duraisamy said.
Each of these processing plants will be able to treat and recycle 2,000 tonnes of organic waste and 2,500 tonnes of inorganic waste. They are being set up across 25 acres, each costing 180 crore.
