Earthquake kills 4 in north India

Four people were killed by Monday’s temblor in north India, three of them in Srinagar, while scores of people suffered injuries across Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and J&K.

SRINAGAR/NEW DELHI: Four people were killed by Monday’s temblor in north India, three of them in Srinagar, while scores of people suffered injuries across Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and J&K.

While a mason came under a crashing stairwell under construction in Bijnor, one Mohammad Ashraf of Reasi district in J&K fell to his death when land slipped by a hillside in Batho village.
Two women, Zoona Begum, 65, of Baramulla and Fatima Begum of Ahanger Mohalla in Bijbehara in Anantnag died of cardiac arrest as tremors gave the valley a violent shake.

Scores of people were injured with J&K CM Mufti Mohammed Sayeed roping in relief and rehabilitation minister Basharat Bukhari for a meeting with senior police and civil officials to assess the damage to life and property in remote areas.

Two CRPF personnel were injured when a bunker in Sopore collapsed. Likewise, two labourers identified as Bilal Lone of Khrew in Pulwama district and Umar Shah of Kishtwar in Jammu, were injured when the wall of JK Cements factory collapsed in Pampore. A pedestrian identified as Firdous Sheikh was injured when a wall fell on him in Batamaloo.

Disaster management and mitigation centre officials said there was no report of damage to life and property from anywhere in Uttarakhand. The shockwaves were also felt in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.
Houses were damaged in Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Anantnag and Shopian with reports of injuries to people.

A boy, Adil Gulzar Bhat of Khudpora, Jammu was critically injured after he jumped off his second storey house during the earthquake. He was shifted to nearby hospital and later referred to Srinagar. Ten more injured people were admitted in Bone and Joints Hospital Barzulla, hospital sources said.
