Number three seed John Isner was eliminated from the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, Austria at the second round in a shock by Latvia's Ernests Gulbis.
Gulbis took the first and third sets against his American opponent in a 6-4 4-6 6-4 victory, his most significant since the 2014 French Open when he beat both Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych, to reach the competition's quarter-final, where he will meet Croatia's Ivo Karlovic, the seventh seed.
The big-serving Karlovic landed 10 aces en route to his 6-4 7-5 victory over Sergiy Stakhovsky.
In the round of 32, South Africa's number two seed Kevin Anderson powered beyond 2010 finalist Andreas Haider-Maurer, of Austria, with 19 aces in a 6-4 7-5 win that takes him through to a meeting with the Czech Republic's Jiri Vesely.
Former winner Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the number four seed, celebrated returning to the world's top 10 this week for the first time since September 2014 by defeating Germany's Tommy Haas 6-3 6-7 (3/7) 6-4. He next faces the Czech Republic's Lukas Rosol.
Italian eighth seed Fabio Fognini also won, defeating France's Paul-Henri Mathieu for the third time in four matches, via a 6-4 3-6 6-4 scoreline to progress to the second round against the Czech Republic's Radek Stepanek.
